Most people have never even heard of acne rosacea but the truth is that it exists and it is very misunderstood. In most cases, acne rosacea, especially in toddlers, is confused with the most common type of acne known as acne vulgaris. However, acne rosacea is quite different.
What makes this skin condition so unique is that it affects more than 14 million people just in America alone yet most do not understand this is what they have. The majority of people simply treat this type of acne as regular acne, meaning home treatment. Therefore, a diagnosis is often missed. For this reason, the number of people with acne rosacea is probably much higher.
The interesting thing is that while toddlers can develop acne rosacea, it is most commonly seen in adults from age 30 to 50. If you have a toddler that you believe may have something going on, you should have him or her checked by a dermatologist or pediatrician for further testing. You will also find that toddlers and adults with fair skin generally develop this type of acne more than people with dark skin do.
Another fascinating fact about acne rosacea is that it is seen more often in females although males can develop the condition too. This hereditary and chronic skin disorder usually appears around the nose, as well as the chin, forehead, and cheeks. In the initial stage, redness of the face is seen, which actually comes and goes. Now, if acne rosacea in toddlers and adults is ignored, serious inflammation and skin eruptions are possible. In fact, permanent scarring can also develop.
People with acne rosacea usually have swelling of the skin tissue, which becomes sensitive to touch. You will also find that if left untreated, the affected area of the skin will become thickened. As the child grows, he or she would likely begin to complain about an associated eye problem known as ocular rosacea. Therefore, if you begin to see redness on your toddler’s face, have it checked right away.
What happens in this case is that tiny blood vessels near the skin’s surface become dilated. As a result, blotchy and red areas, which are known as papules develop. Just as with other types of acne, you will see cases ranging from mild to severe. A mild case usually develops into a very small lesion, a moderate case into the size of a pencil eraser and in more serious cases the lesion can easily grow to that of the size of a dime or quarter.
