Using Sulfur Acne Medication During Pregnancy

New studies show that approximately 80% of the United States’ population experiences acne at one time or another.  Although great debate exists as to the actual cause, a number of theories exist.  For instance, some experts believe acne is caused by the male sex hormone found in men and women, which produces too much oil in the sebaceous glands.  Other people believe that tight clothing rubs the skin, thus causing irritation that then turns into acne.

No matter the true cause of acne, the bottom line is that it is not fun.  In addition to sometimes being painful, acne is also embarrassing.  Today, you can find a number of over-the-counter products, all promising great results.  In addition, new prescription medications have been developed and while most work well, some side effects should be considered.  For most people, options are wide but for pregnant women, treatments are limited for the safety of the baby.

Interestingly, sulfur is one of the oldest treatments known for acne, first becoming popular in the 1950s.  This means that even before antibiotics were developed, people were using sulfur for a number of things to include acne.  However, while antibiotics are now available in many forms, some people still rely on sulfur.

Sulfur is used for acne as an exfoliate treatment.  When gently rubbed onto the skin, sulfur works by removing the top layer of dead skin cells.  The result is less visible acne and smoother skin.  Because sulfur can be used topically, it is an ideal solution for expecting women.  Again, since pregnant women want to be extra careful about medications taken orally, sulfur offers acne relief without potential harm.

Another way to use sulfur for acne during pregnancy is by making a mask.  You could mix the sulfur with vinegar, honey, egg whites, rose water, or a number of ingredients to create a thick paste.  This paste would then be applied directly to the skin and left on for 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the severity of the acne.  After that, you would want to rinse your face with warm water to remove the ingredients and then with cool water to help close the pores.

You will enjoy the most benefit by using a sulfur cleanser or mask on a regular basis.  Typically, using the sulfur twice a week should make a significant difference in the level of acne you live with.  Sulfur is gentle but highly effective, which is why its popularity continues to soar.  Now, you can find several FDA-approved products sold over the counter that contains sulfur, which is fine.

However, it would be important to check the other ingredients before using to make sure they are not harmful when absorbed into the skin.  If you were unsure, talk to your doctor first and he or she can provide some guidance.  The only bad thing about sulfur is the smell, which resembles rotten eggs.
