Every mother and father wants his/her baby to be healthy and happy. During the baby years, a number of health issues are going to arise. Some are accidents in which emergency care is needed while others are simply a part of growing such as teething, diaper rash, and even baby acne. Most babies have beautiful skin with little to no flaw but sometimes, a baby will develop pimples, just as you would see on a teenager.
Baby acne, which is officially called Acne Neonatorum, affects about 20% of all newborns. Typically, you would notice red pimples, which usually form on the cheeks although they can also develop on the chin and forehead. In most cases, baby acne will appear immediately after birth to a few weeks of age. The good news is that by the time your baby is two to four months old, the acne usually disappears on its own. Now, if your baby has baby acne but it does not go away, you need to have him/her seen by the pediatrician.
The development of baby acne is attributed to several different factors. For instance, it could be the result of some type of skin irritation, perhaps clothing, laundry soap, or even a milk allergy. Other factors include the mother’s hormones, which take time to leave the baby’s system, oil used during bath time, certain medications, or even medication taken by the mother and then passed onto the baby via breast milk.
If you have a baby with acne, make sure you use clear, warm water to wash your baby’s face several times during the day. However, you never want to scrub the skin in that the acne could become worse. Instead, use gentle wiping just to remove any surface oil or dirt. If needed, you can purchase an anti-bacterial soap formulated for babies. If you cannot find soap, and then make a mixture of vinegar, water, and strawberry leaves, applied once a day.
Although many new parents will use baby lotion on the entire body after bath time, we recommend you avoid the face, especially if your baby already has an outbreak of acne. Remember, because the most common cause of baby acne is an abundance of hormones from the mother that cause too much stimulation in the sebaceous glands of the baby, the problem typically goes away if left alone. Therefore, while it might seem a little alarming, baby acne will not do your child harm.
Sometimes, a baby will also develop acne on the scalp, which again can be treated the same way as acne on the face. You may even notice during the period of your child having acne that at times, the pimples become far worse. Again, this is nothing to worry about but of course, if you were to have concerns, you can always have your baby checked by the doctor. If the acne is extremely bad, the pediatrician may prescribe a topical ointment consisting of benzoyl peroxide.
