Acne and Diet: How to Reduce the Risk of Acne

Diet plays a huge role in the health of the body, from preventing serious health risks like heart disease to keeping skin clear and free of acne. When individuals utilize their diet as a stepping stone to total health, it’s called “holistic medicine.” The theory is to prevent health conditions like acne by ensuring that the body is healthy from the inside out. There are some important diet tips to prevent or reduce the risk of acne.

Vitamins

There are vitamins that are very important to the health of the skin. These include B vitamins, vitamin C, Zinc, and iron. Without these vitamins, the body suffers in many different ways, including with potential breakouts. Some individuals utilize a multi-vitamin to ensure that they’re getting the vitamins they need, even if they’re not all coming from food sources.

Water

Water could be the most neglected part of an individual’s diet that can prevent acne. Water is essential to the health of organs like the heart, kidneys, and liver. Skin is the body’s largest organ and water helps to flush it free of toxins and impurities. Without enough water, the skin can become dehydrated and unable to flush out those impurities. This can result in acne. Men and women should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water throughout the day.

Fruits and Vegetables

It’s important to eat at least five servings of vegetables each day, and the more color variety one gets, the better. Tomatoes, leafy greens, garlic, carrots, citrus fruit, bananas, mango, watermelon; all of these are great choices and the color variety is good. The color variety of fruits is indicative of the different vitamins present within them, which is why choosing different colors each day is a good idea.

Fatty Acids

Fatty acids are wonderful for the skin, and also help prevent numerous other conditions. Omega 3 fatty acids are the best kinds, and these come from healthy foods like cold-pressed seeds and baked or grilled fish. These can also be found in supplement form if you’re not getting enough from your food consumption.

Foods Rich in Fiber

Another important element in the anti-acne diet is fiber. Fiber can be found in whole grains, lentils, beans and other foods. Not only is fiber essential to help prevent acne, but it prevents a host of other health complications as well.

What to Avoid

Sugar and processed fats are the biggest enemy of healthy, clear skin. Sugar feeds bad bacteria, which is often to blame for breakouts and acne. Individuals who want to prevent and get rid of acne should avoid too much sugar and fats in their diets. Caffeine, fried foods, and highly processed foods should also be avoided.

By eating correctly, you will lay the foundation for excellent-looking, clear and healthy skin.

If you have never heard of “acne vulgaris”, you are certainly not alone. Although most people associate acne with the face or even various body parts such as the back, buttocks, or chest, acne vulgaris is another real skin condition that can be painful and embarrassing. Obviously, treating acne on this area of the body requires special treatment, which should be offered by a licensed dermatologist or skilled salon.

The most important thing when choosing treatment for acne vulgaris is making sure that you conduct your homework. The more knowledge you have the better. After all, you want to make sure products used are not just effective, but more importantly, safe. With this, you will have confidence that the acne will go away and stay away.

The salon you work with would first help by identifying the type of acne, which would lead to the right type of treatment. Remember, acne comes in many different forms. For instance, there are strains of papules, cystic, rosecea, and again, vulgaris. The good news is that while some forms of acne can be difficult to treat, acne vulgaris is not only common but also successfully treated without intense treatment.

With this form of acne, the hair follicles become seriously infected, inflamed, and red. As you can imagine, this leads to pain and discomfort. When choosing a salon, ask lots of questions. You want to make sure they are trained and licensed to provide the type of treatment needed. You should also ask for references if possible and then follow up. In addition, check with the local Better Business Bureau to ensure no unresolved claims are pending on the particular salon.

Typically, you would go into the salon and have a consultation with a professional. This person would talk to you about your lifestyle such as diet and hygiene, and go over any medications or health problems you might be facing. Even your skin type would be a factor in the treatment option chosen. Most often, certain topical antibiotics such as tetracycline are used in combination with acne medication, which might include Isotretinoin, better known as Accutane.

Just as when treating acne on the face or other parts of the body, salon treatments for acne vulgaris take time to work. Therefore, you need to be patient, allowing the medication and/or therapy time to heal the infection and clear the acne. Generally, a person would expect to see favorable results within four to six weeks, depending on the treatment option used and the severity of the acne.

If the acne vulgaris is extremely bad, the specialist may take a microscopic biopsy or scraping to determine if something else were going on. Once you have undergone treatment, chances are you would be advised to stay on a low fat, healthy diet, wear loose clothing, and to stay dry, all things that can help prevent another outbreak of the acne. Just remind yourself that you do not have to go through life miserable or embarrassed because of acne vulgaris, you do have viable options.

Acne is a very misunderstood skin disease. While poor or high fat content diet, poor hygiene, and other factors can play a role, the truth is that acne is the result of too much oil being produced in the sebaceous glands. What happens is that the glands start to shed an abundance of dead cells all at once, which then blocks the glands. As a result, infection develops, thus acne. Hormones within the body are responsible for controlling the amount of oil produced but if they are imbalanced, problems occur.

People go through a variety of hormonal issues in life, especially during the teenage years of puberty. Androgens, which are male sex hormones, are found in women and in men. These hormones are what produce too much sebum. For this reason, many doctors will put women with acne on birth control pills to help combat acne while men typically do not have the same fluctuation of androgens, as women do.

A common type of acne is called Acne Vulgaris. Because it is so common, treatment options are in abundance and typically, very successful. Just as with any type of acne, vulgaris comes in different levels of severity. In mild to moderate cases, a topical cream with antibiotics may be applied. However, when dealing with a case of severe acne vulgaris, other more intense treatment options are offered.

In addition to acne vulgaris, which can be severe, acne Conglobata, acne fulminans, and gram-negative follicultis can be a problem. Not only do these types of acne become painful, they are also disruptive to life, physically, emotionally, and mentally. The key to treating a severe case of acne vulgaris is to get immediate treatment instead of waiting until the condition has become out of control.

With Acne Conglobata, a person would have widespread blackheads with inflamed nodules that grow over time and then burst. Unfortunately, this type of acne causes scarring and ongoing struggles with infection. For Acne Fulminans, the acne ulcerates. Because of this, fever and pain are usually associated, along with aching joints and high white blood cell count. Then with Gram-Negative Follicultis, the culprit is bacteria, which can include E-coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, and others.

With all of these strains of acne, to include severe acne vulgaris, the typical treatment includes antibiotics and Isotretinoin, also known as the branded Accutane. In addition, it is common for doctors to prescribe some type of topical cream to help ease swelling, inflammation, and pain. Many of these creams also include some type of antibiotic with tetracycline being one of the more common.

In all cases, the pores become clogged due to high levels of oil produced by the sebaceous glands. When acne vulgaris is extreme, lesions form, which then lead to scarring. Each type of lesion would respond better to individual treatment, which is why working closely with a professional dermatologist is your best bet. With any treatment option, the goal should be to first clear up the current acne breakout and then to put the patient on a maintenance program so future outbreaks are few and far between.

Typically, we think of acne being a teenage affliction but in truth, adults and even animals can also suffer from mild to serious outbreaks. This means that regardless of age, lifestyle, or race, acne can affect just about anyone. Today, it is estimated that more than 15 million people in the United States live with some degree of acne, making it the number one skin disease.

Many times, adult acne is different from teenage acne. For instance, during teenage years, the male sex hormone called androgen rages with an excessive production of oil that clogs up glands. In adults, you will often see acne coming and going, sometimes with only one or two pimples, other times with major outbreaks. Because adult acne is so inconsistent in most cases, it can be a little tricky to treat. Obviously, you need something that will work but nothing too harsh, except in severe cases.

When it comes to adult acne cures or treatments, two types are usually used. First, the acne needs to be cured but second a maintenance program should be established to keep the acne from coming back. Most people choose to talk to a dermatologist to get on the right form of medication, which could be oral or topical.

With medication, acne can be battled from the onset and then other treatments used to maintain healthy skin. Of course, in severe cases of acne, other more intense treatment options are available to include dermabrasion, laser, chemical peel, punch grafts, and so on. A good doctor would sit down with you to identify your skin and acne type to determine the best course of action.

Remember, acne is caused by pores or skin follicles becoming clogged. Once this happens, bacteria is trapped, which then causes inflammation, redness, pain, itching, and unsightly scars. Therefore, while medication is usually the best form of treatment, you can also change your diet to include fresh fruits and vegetables that will help lower the amount of oil in the skin.

Daily hygiene is also essential. Again, dirty skin is not the primary cause of acne but if the skin is not cared for properly, it can certainly exacerbate the problem. By washing your face at least twice daily, using gently motions and a gentle cleanser with anti-bacterial agents, you will find your skin is firmer, has better texture, and acne breakouts are not as bad.

The key to adult acne cure is getting on the right treatment and then doing everything in your power to avoid infection. This means taking good care of the skin, eating right, but also not pinching and trying to pop pimples. To help unclog the pores and promote new skin growth, you could always use an over-the-counter product containing a combination of lactic and salicylic acids, which works amazingly well.

Not only does acne attack the face, but some people also deal with problems on other areas of the body to include the chest, legs, arms, buttocks, and back. As you can imagine, having acne on the back can be just as embarrassing as face acne, especially during the summer months when people want to wear tanks tops or bathing suits.

Struggling with back acne is not nearly as common but just as big a problem for the person experiencing it. Just as with the face, acne on the back can develop as a minor outbreak or become very serious, leading to deep scarring. Known as “body acne”, the affected area is usually covered with small, red spots, which are painful and itchy. If not treated, these red spots become irritated, swelling and becoming unbearable.

When it comes to body acne, usually just one area of the body is affected. The most important thing you can do for back acne is to make sure you maintain good hygiene. Unfortunately, if the back is not cleaned properly, the acne can spread to other parts of the body. Remember, back acne is exaggerated due to poor hygiene but the problem is often associated with excessive perspiration, over active oil glands, contact allergies, and even a hormonal imbalance.

While back or body acne is seen in adults, it is prevalent in teenagers, both male and female. If you suffer from this, you have options to make the problem better. For starters, use an anti-bacterial soap, wiping gently, never scrubbing. Once the body is dry, we suggest you purchase a product that contains benzoyl peroxide. This product reduces swelling, actually helping by building the body’s immune system.

Although acne cannot actually be cured, it can be brought under control and then managed. In basic form, the skin should be kept clean, dry, and oil free. From there, choose a quality product to apply to the affected area. Now tetracycline can also be prescribed in oral form, which means it works from the inside out. Many people have found this particular drug quite beneficial, especially when it comes to easing pain and discomfort.

The tetracycline coupled with a topical cream helps soothe and cool the area of back acne, making your life far more comfortable. Because topical creams can be applied only where needed, they are a popular choice for people with back or body acne. Tetracycline is a form of antibiotic. Again, while tetracycline is often taken by mouth, it also comes in topical cream products. Sometimes, doctors will also prescribe clindamycin or erythromycin, which are also antibiotics.

Now, if the tetracycline is ineffective, you may find your dermatologist recommending another course of action. If you are a woman, you may be asked to try birth control pills, which can balance out hormones. Otherwise, you may be prescribed something like Accutane, which is an oral retinoid that reduces sebaceous gland secretions.

More than 17 million people in America suffer from some degree of acne. Fortunately, most have only minor problems with an occasional breakout. However, some of those people live with a very serious form of acne known as cystic acne. Unlike whiteheads or blackheads, cystic acne is more complex and difficult to treat. With this, the roots of the cystic acne are deep in the skin layers, not on the surface. Because of this, the person generally experiences pain and large, unsightly pimples.

With this form of acne, cysts form due to blockage of the skin pores, usually because of too much sebum or oil. Then, if the individual also has retention keratosis, the problem is far more significant. This additional problem occurs as the skin cells do not shed normally. With the problem with cell regeneration, skin follicles become blocked, which make them a prime target for bacterial infection.

It is important to understand that treating cystic acne takes time and a lot of patience. Because the infection is deep within the skin, the healing process is much longer and different from that of normal acne. Another common problem associated with cystic acne is deep scarring and discoloration of the skin. As you can imagine, someone living with this form of acne makes life difficult. Teenagers are teased in school while adults are often looked at as being dirty, which is not at all the case.

To remove the problem of cystic acne and the left behind lesions, medical treatment is imperative. Typically, a dermatologist will recommend a strong drug called Isotretinoin, more commonly known as Accutane. Usually, the person would use the oral medication for up to six months before optimal results are seen. The good news is that this form of treatment for cystic acne is successful in 80% of cases.

For this cystic acne treatment, the oil gland size is reduced, thus reducing or eliminating the problem of blocked pores. Because there are some potential serious side effects associated with this particular drug, it must be monitored closely. For instance, some patients have actually become suicidal. Lesser side effects include redness, swelling, and dryness, which can be eased with specially formulated moisturizers.

Some doctors will also suggest cystic acne treatments of cortisone shots. Although there is a slight sting of the needle, the process is virtually painless and very effective. With this, redness, inflammation, and swelling are reduced. More commonly known as “intra-lesional corticosteroid therapy”, both cysts and lesions are reduced. Additionally, laser surgery can help. Although a relatively new procedure, laser is getting rave reviews.

Remember, cystic acne is deep and very damaging, which is why special treatment is needed. Instead of trying to “pop” cystic acne, they need to be left alone in that trying to force pus to the surface will only cause more damage. You might also try using over-the-counter products that contain 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, which can help kill off bacteria, which causes the formation of cysts.
