Using Tetracycline for Back Acne

Not only does acne attack the face, but some people also deal with problems on other areas of the body to include the chest, legs, arms, buttocks, and back.  As you can imagine, having acne on the back can be just as embarrassing as face acne, especially during the summer months when people want to wear tanks tops or bathing suits.

Struggling with back acne is not nearly as common but just as big a problem for the person experiencing it.  Just as with the face, acne on the back can develop as a minor outbreak or become very serious, leading to deep scarring.  Known as “body acne”, the affected area is usually covered with small, red spots, which are painful and itchy.  If not treated, these red spots become irritated, swelling and becoming unbearable.

When it comes to body acne, usually just one area of the body is affected.  The most important thing you can do for back acne is to make sure you maintain good hygiene.  Unfortunately, if the back is not cleaned properly, the acne can spread to other parts of the body.  Remember, back acne is exaggerated due to poor hygiene but the problem is often associated with excessive perspiration, over active oil glands, contact allergies, and even a hormonal imbalance.

While back or body acne is seen in adults, it is prevalent in teenagers, both male and female.  If you suffer from this, you have options to make the problem better.  For starters, use an anti-bacterial soap, wiping gently, never scrubbing.  Once the body is dry, we suggest you purchase a product that contains benzoyl peroxide.  This product reduces swelling, actually helping by building the body’s immune system.

Although acne cannot actually be cured, it can be brought under control and then managed.  In basic form, the skin should be kept clean, dry, and oil free.  From there, choose a quality product to apply to the affected area.  Now tetracycline can also be prescribed in oral form, which means it works from the inside out.  Many people have found this particular drug quite beneficial, especially when it comes to easing pain and discomfort.

The tetracycline coupled with a topical cream helps soothe and cool the area of back acne, making your life far more comfortable.  Because topical creams can be applied only where needed, they are a popular choice for people with back or body acne.  Tetracycline is a form of antibiotic.  Again, while tetracycline is often taken by mouth, it also comes in topical cream products.  Sometimes, doctors will also prescribe clindamycin or erythromycin, which are also antibiotics.

Now, if the tetracycline is ineffective, you may find your dermatologist recommending another course of action.  If you are a woman, you may be asked to try birth control pills, which can balance out hormones.  Otherwise, you may be prescribed something like Accutane, which is an oral retinoid that reduces sebaceous gland secretions.
