Dealing with Severe Acne Vulgaris
Acne is a very misunderstood skin disease. While poor or high fat content diet, poor hygiene, and other factors can play a role, the truth is that acne is the result of too much oil being produced in the sebaceous glands. What happens is that the glands start to shed an abundance of dead cells all at once, which then blocks the glands. As a result, infection develops, thus acne. Hormones within the body are responsible for controlling the amount of oil produced but if they are imbalanced, problems occur. People go through a variety of hormonal issues in life, especially during the teenage years of puberty. Androgens, which are male sex hormones, are found in women and in men. These hormones are what produce too much sebum. For this reason, many doctors will put women with acne on birth control pills to help combat acne while men typically do not have the same fluctuation of androgens, as women do. A common type of acne is called Acne Vulgaris. Because it is so common, treatment options are in abundance and typically, very successful. Just as with any type of acne, vulgaris comes in different levels of severity. In mild to moderate cases, a topical cream with antibiotics may be applied. However, when dealing with a case of severe acne vulgaris, other more intense treatment options are offered. In addition to acne vulgaris, which can be severe, acne Conglobata, acne fulminans, and gram-negative follicultis can be a problem. Not only do these types of acne become painful, they are also disruptive to life, physically, emotionally, and mentally. The key to treating a severe case of acne vulgaris is to get immediate treatment instead of waiting until the condition has become out of control. With Acne Conglobata, a person would have widespread blackheads with inflamed nodules that grow over time and then burst. Unfortunately, this type of acne causes scarring and ongoing struggles with infection. For Acne Fulminans, the acne ulcerates. Because of this, fever and pain are usually associated, along with aching joints and high white blood cell count. Then with Gram-Negative Follicultis, the culprit is bacteria, which can include E-coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, and others. With all of these strains of acne, to include severe acne vulgaris, the typical treatment includes antibiotics and Isotretinoin, also known as the branded Accutane. In addition, it is common for doctors to prescribe some type of topical cream to help ease swelling, inflammation, and pain. Many of these creams also include some type of antibiotic with tetracycline being one of the more common. In all cases, the pores become clogged due to high levels of oil produced by the sebaceous glands. When acne vulgaris is extreme, lesions form, which then lead to scarring. Each type of lesion would respond better to individual treatment, which is why working closely with a professional dermatologist is your best bet. With any treatment option, the goal should be to first clear up the current acne breakout and then to put the patient on a maintenance program so future outbreaks are few and far between.
